The Winners of the Game Hub Games of the Year Awards 2009
All your votes are in and counted. So who were the winners of the Game Hub Games of the Year Awards 2009? There are a few surprises amongst the obvious ones. Fortunately for all the nominees, nobody got zero votes (somebody got one though). So here are the Top 3 for each of the 13 categories:
Best PS3 Game
1st: Uncharted 2: Among Thieves
2nd: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2
3rd: Killzone 2
An absolutely staggering 79% of the votes went to Uncharted 2. It’s well deserved though as the game wowed everyone with its graphics, gameplay and brilliant characters. We were a little surprised that Modern Warfare 2 didn’t put up more of a fight. Killzone 2 has done well to narrowly (by one vote!!) keep Assassin’s Creed II at bay considering it was released early in the year.
Best Xbox 360 Game
1st: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2
2nd: Assassin’s Creed II
3rd: Batman Arkham Asylum
While it’s no surprise to see Modern Warfare at the top, it’s a little surprising to see no 360 exclusives in the top three. Halo ODST, Left 4 Dead 2, Forza 3 and GTA Gay Tony all seemingly taking each other out letting Ezio and Batman sneak in.
Best Nintendo Wii Game
1st: New Super Mario Bros. Wii
2nd: Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles
3rd: Dead Space: Extraction
Four player Mario battered the competition, taking almost half of the votes. Good to see the Dead Space franchise going from strength to strength too, we might be seeing Dead Space 2 on the big consoles by the end of the year if it’s finished in time.
Best PC Game
1st: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2
2nd: The Sims 3
3rd: Dragon Age: Origins
Despite the lack of dedicated servers you lot still love MW2, and why not. Just a shame the public metacritic score was decimated by the haters. Get over it, we have. Doesn’t look like the money-machine that is the Sims is going anywhere despite all the freebie copycats springing up everywhere. Dragon Age has been received with plaudits of ‘RPG of the decade’ by many PC gamers. It performs much better on PCs than it does on the consoles too.
Best Handheld Game
1st: Little Big Planet (PSP)
2nd: GTA: Chinatown Wars (DS/PSP)
3rd: Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks (DS)
Probably the biggest surprise of the lot right there. Many would have thought GTA was the shoe-in particularly with the DS and PSP votes combined, but Sackboy’s miniature adventures took 44% of the votes! Zelda would have perhaps got some extra votes had it been out a bit longer.
Best PSN / XBLA Game
1st: Battlefield 1943 (PSN/XBLA)
2nd: Fat Princess (PSN)
3rd: PixelJunk Shooter (PSN)
Battlefield captivated the masses by getting PS3 and 360 gamers to race towards 43 million kills to open a new island first. 360 gamers won by a comfortable margin, but it took both sides less than a week. Good job troops. The Beta for Battlefield Bad Company 2 is currently underway in one of 2010’s sure-fire hits. Fat Princess may be a bit fussy to find a proper match but it’s managed to maintain a steady audience to take second place and there’s a PSP version soon too. If you’ve not played PixelJunk Shooter yet, you simply must. Easily the arcade shooter of the year.
Best Action / Adventure Game
1st: Uncharted 2: Among Thieves (PS3)
2nd: Assassin’s Creed 2 (Multi)
3rd: Batman: Arkham Asylum (Multi)
The genre’s never had a stronger line-up. Batman is easily the greatest comic book game ever made; Assassin’s Creed II took the criticisms of the first game and fixed them in a way that made us all feel that maybe people do listen when we have a good moan. Even with two games this good though, Uncharted 2 swatted them away with 82%. Unbelievable.
Best Driving Game
1st: Need for Speed: Shift (Multi)
2nd: Forza Motorsport 3 (360 only)
3rd: Colin McRae: Dirt 2 (Multi)
Despite changing to a much more serious sim-sided track racer, NFS: Shift hasn’t harmed its reputation, instead it seems to be picking up even more respect. Forza 3’s high presence is all the more respectable as a single platform exclusive and shows our tastes shifting to serious minded track racers. Just in-time for Gran Turismo 5, which will be technically brilliant, but will it be as much fun to play as the new boys? As for Dirt 2, possibly the greatest rally game ever made and a worthy tribute to the Scottish legend.
Best Fighting Game
1st: Tekken 6
2nd: Street Fighter IV
3rd: UFC 2009: Undisputed
The two big boys returned this year, but it was the more recent Tekken 6 that came out on top over Capcom’s title. Perhaps some of you are waiting for the upcoming special (fixed) version of SFIV? Let’s hope final boss Seth isn’t as much of a cock this time around. UFC, the game where one kick in the face can end it all, has sold well around the globe and will be getting a sequel, but will have competition in 2010 with EA’s MMA.
Best Platformer Game
1st: Ratchet & Clank: A Crack in Time (PS3)
2nd: New Super Mario Bros. Wii (Wii)
3rd: Lego Indiana Jones 2 (Multi)
The platform genre is slowly disappearing if we’re honest, as over the years they’ve become more about the guns than jumping around. Most of them seem to be aimed at the younger gamers with dodgy movie tie-ins. So while Ratchet and Mario haven’t particularly changed much over the years, they’ve managed to do what we love them for with exceptionally good form late in 2009. Ratchet, surprisingly took 54% of the votes in this one, it really is the perfect blend of shooting, platforming and puzzles though to be honest. While Mario’s biggest change was finally getting some much wanted multiplayer action.
Mario Galaxy 2 might fancy the title in 2010 though.
Best First-Person-Shooter Game
1st: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (Multi)
2nd: Killzone 2 (PS3)
3rd: Borderlands (Multi)
There was only ever going to be one winner for this category and as an overall package, we can’t really argue and have to agree with the 60% of you that voted for it. Killzone 2’s done well to stay in so many gamers minds so long from its release ages ago, but it was a landmark technical achievement for the PS3 with some gripping online action. As for Borderlands, it was some way behind the other two but it impressively fought off the likes of Halo ODST and Metroid Prime Trilogy, probably thanks to some recently well-received DLC expansions.
Best Sports Game
1st: FIFA 10
2nd: Wii Sports Resort
3rd: Skate 2
EA has been top of the footy table for a few seasons now after upping their game considerably to get their crown back from Pro Evo and they don’t seem to be relaxing their efforts with this year’s game being one of their best yet. Wii Sports Resort gave us more of what we loved from the first game, namely even more games and more precise controls with the motion plus block. Microsoft and Sony seriously have their work cut out if they want to cut into the Wii’s market in 2010. Skate 2 was a bit of a shocker beating Madden and naughty golfer Tiger Woods into third place. Did anyone buy Tony Hawk’s Ride yet by the way?
Ultimate Game of the Year 2009
1st: Uncharted 2: Among Thieves (PS3)
2nd: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (Multi)
3rd: Assassin’s Creed II (Multi)
It’s what Sony’s machine has been missing for years, a stone cold killer app. After looking at Gears of War for years in envy they finally have something they can really show off their PS3 with. Uncharted 2 perfected its gunplay and climbing, added multiplayer and had more excitement than 2009’s cinema line up, not to mention a better script, and visuals that left your jaw on the floor. When I looked across Shabhala towards the end of the game it was almost sad, because I knew it would be ages before anything else would look this good and more poignantly I’d probably never see something as stunning in real life (unless I discover Shangri-La on the way to work one day). It would seem 78% of you liked it too.
Any other year and Modern Warfare 2 would have cleaned up, but it’s still a classic title that has already exceeded sales records the world over. Third place was tightly contested between the much improved Assassin’s Creed II and Batman: Arkham Asylum, both showing what a fantastic year it’s been for the action /adventure genre. Would have been interesting to see who would have come third if Batman came out later in the year though. With any luck we’ll be playing his sequel by Christmas.
So that’s it. 2009, an excellent year in gaming, with so many quality games released, 2010’s already swelling early release list will just have to wait till we’ve mastered every corner, solved every Riddle, found every renaissance feather, shot our way to Lvl. 50 online and charted every treasure.
